Exterior The all-new Ford Ranger Raptor is one of the smartest looking utes available – to be perfectly honest, it’s one of the handsomest vehicles of any description. It’s big and bold, of course – the power beneath its bonnet clearly suggested by a muscular body style. Nevertheless, it’s just as effective a family vehicle as it is a hard-working one. A four-door body, for instance, makes access for rear-row travellers easy, as does an elevated ride height.
Unique Raptor features You can tell whenever the Ford Raptor turns up because its front mesh grille is dominated by the word FORD in big letters. The Raptor is the only Ranger model with this distinctive feature, just one of many reasons why it’s the top-graded model. Similarly, the vehicle’s alloy wheels feature FORD prominently on their centre caps.
LED lights A go-anywhere vehicle such as the Ranger Raptor requires first-class illumination, which LEDs dutifully provide. Accordingly, the Raptor is fitted with Matrix LED headlamps (featuring LED daytime running lights), LED front fog lamps and LED taillamps. Matrix LED headlamps emit exactly the right levels of light according to the prevailing conditions, providing optimal illumination without dazzling oncoming motorists. What’s more, the Raptor comes with Exterior Zone Lighting (compatible with the FordPass app), allowing you to switch on and adjust illumination all around the vehicle.
Rapturous colours The Raptor features a super-classy Arctic White paint finish at no extra cost. Should you wish to change things up a bit, there are plenty more optional colours to choose from. For instance, if you want the complete opposite, Shadow Black fits the bill nicely. If you fancy something in between, how about Aluminium Silver or Meteor Grey? Perhaps you’d prefer a colour that will make the vehicle pop, in which case, Blue Lightning or Sedona Orange are fine options.
Interior The Ford Ranger Raptor easily accommodates four full-size adults or a young family of five. The driver is provided with an eight-way-adjustable position while the co-passenger has the benefit of four-way adjustability. The driver is afforded a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear knob too. Dual-zone climate control is also included, providing travellers front and back with an equitable in-cabin temperature.
Ford performance seats A pair of perforated leather sports seats feature in both compartments, inspired by the kind that are found in jet fighters. Not only do they look great, featuring red contrast stitching and suede inserts, they’re super-comfortable and extremely supportive. And they’re designed specifically to withstand the travails of off-roading and vigorous cornering. Also featured are a multifunction sports steering wheel and magnesium gearshift paddles, allowing the driver to fully savour the Raptor in all its high-performance glory.
Infotainment highlights A 12.4-inch Digital Cluster provides an array of instrumentation readings – it’s customisable too. Also included is a 12-inch centre-mounted portrait touchscreen, with which you can mirror your smartphone, thanks to the inclusion of Android Auto/Apple CarPlay. It also provides access to a SYNC 4A infotainment system, allowing you to enjoy advanced route-planning functionality, voice-recognition and plenty of audio entertainment options. Wireless charging is included too, while a 360-degree camera provides excellent all-around visibility.
Cargo bed Access to the Ranger Raptor’s cargo bed is provided by a tailgate which folds outwards and downwards, sitting flush with the load bed floor once fully unlatched. At which point, it provides a useful work bench to which clamps, etc. can be easily affixed. Positions for power points have been provided, which means there’s every chance the owner will be able to plug in electrical equipment. At the time of writing, Ford hasn’t released payload information but it’s likely to be similar to the current 750-kilogram capacity.
Performance The Ford Ranger Raptor is fitted with a 3.0-litre V6 four-wheel drivetrain, which is paired with ten-speed automatic transmission. This twin-turbo EcoBoost engine produces 292kW of power and 583Nm of torque. An elevated driving position provides an excellent view of the way ahead. Steering control is tighter than before, providing the driver with absolute confidence and a greater sense of connection with the road. The vehicle now handles the widest range of surfaces with supreme conviction.
Pulling power The Ranger Raptor is fitted with rear tow hooks – and a towbar which enables flat towing should you connect the vehicle to a motor vehicle or trailer, etc. A maximum towing capacity of 2,500kg (braked) is possible. The Raptor also features front-mounted tow hooks. This means that in the unlikely event it becomes stuck or disabled, another vehicle will be able to pull it clear and/or tow it to the nearest garage.
Drive your way The Raptor comes with seven selectable drive modes. As the name suggests, Normal is the ideal setting for everyday motoring, including urban situations, not least because it delivers optimal fuel efficiency. Sport mode provides the driver with enhanced feedback by tightening up the steering; it’s particularly useful when tackling twisty roads. The remaining modes are Slippery (for grass, gravel and snow), Mud (which functions effectively on sandy surfaces too), Rock and Baja (for sportier off-road motoring).
More modes As well as the aforementioned drive modes, the Raptor features four selectable steering modes: Normal, Comfort, Sport and Off-road, each of which is self-explanatory. The following selectable damper modes feature too: Normal, Sport and Off-road. There’s even a selection of exhaust modes: Normal, Quiet, Sport and Baja.
